Astrian Light
A coast that faces south — and Ravello, which faces all of it
Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Amalfi. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.
Photo tip
Ravello Villa Rufolo terrace (ticket required) for panoramic south-facing Gulf of Salerno views. Positano from SP425 path above the village facing southwest. Amalfi harbor at sunrise for the south-facing Cathedral of St. Andrew in morning light.
The Amalfi Coast runs roughly east–west, facing south over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Positano faces southwest, Amalfi town faces south, and Ravello — perched on a ridge 365 meters above the coast — faces south-southwest over the entire Gulf of Salerno. The Villa Rufolo gardens in Ravello, designed specifically for their view, have a terrace that overlooks the gulf and hosts the Ravello Festival concerts in summer (ticket required). From here you're looking down at both Minori and Maiori below, with the sea extending to the horizon. Positano is best photographed from the sea or from the SP425 path above the village facing southwest. Amalfi town's harbor faces south; the Cathedral of St. Andrew catches direct morning light from the east. The Amalfitana coastal road (SS163) has pulloffs with direct south-facing views.
