Associated with personal resources, material security, values, and self-worth. What you own, earn, and find valuable — both materially and psychologically.

Associated with communication, short journeys, siblings, immediate environment, and early education. How you exchange information with the world around you.

Begins at the IC. Associated with home, family of origin, roots, private life, and psychological foundations. Where you come from and where you retreat to.

Associated with creativity, self-expression, romance, children, and pleasure. What you create for the joy of creating — before it becomes work.

Associated with daily routines, health, work environment, service, and the body as an instrument. The house of craft, maintenance, and improvement.

Begins at the Descendant. Associated with partnerships, marriage, open enemies, and one-to-one relationships. What you seek in others and what others reflect back to you.

Associated with shared resources, transformation, intimacy, death, and what is exchanged when two systems merge. The house of what is not visible on the surface.

Associated with philosophy, higher education, long-distance travel, and the search for meaning. Where you go — physically or intellectually — to find a broader perspective.

One of four classical elements. The air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. In the astrological tradition, air symbolizes intellect, communication, social connection, and the exchange of ideas.

The eleventh sign. Fixed air. Traditionally linked to collective vision, innovation, and structural independence. Despite its name, Aquarius is an air sign — its domain is ideas, not water. Ruled by Uranus.

The first sign of the tropical zodiac, associated with the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. Cardinal fire. Traditionally linked to initiation, individuality, and the impulse to begin. Ruled by Mars.

The zodiac degree rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and location of birth. It changes approximately every two hours, which is why birth time matters. In astrology, it symbolizes the first impression one gives, the body, and the lens through which life is approached.

The fourth sign. Cardinal water. Associated with emotional memory, nurturing, and the need for belonging. Cancer symbolizes the invisible architecture of safety and shelter. Ruled by the Moon.

The tenth sign. Cardinal earth. Associated with structure, discipline, and long-term ambition. Capricorn symbolizes the slow construction of something that endures. Ruled by Saturn.

One of three modalities. The cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn — each marking the beginning of a season. In astrology, cardinal energy symbolizes initiation, leadership, and the impulse to start.

A small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, classified as a centaur. In astrology, Chiron symbolizes a wound that does not fully heal but becomes a source of understanding and the capacity to help others through similar pain.

A chart created by calculating the midpoints of corresponding planets and points in two natal charts. In astrology, it symbolizes the relationship itself as a third entity — not who each person is, but what they create together.

An aspect formed when two planets occupy the same or very close degrees of the zodiac (typically within 8°). In astrology, a conjunction symbolizes fusion, intensification, and a blending of the energies of both planets — for better or worse.

The zodiac degree setting on the western horizon at birth — the exact opposite of the Ascendant. Marks the cusp of the 7th house. In astrology, it symbolizes what one seeks in others, partnerships, and the qualities projected onto relationships.

A planet is in detriment when it occupies the sign opposite its domicile (e.g., Mars in Libra, Venus in Scorpio). In the tradition, this suggests the planet must work harder to express itself, though harder does not mean worse.

A planet is in domicile when it occupies the sign it rules (e.g., Mars in Aries, Venus in Taurus). In the tradition, this suggests the planet operates with ease and full access to its symbolic resources.

One of four classical elements. The earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. In the astrological tradition, earth symbolizes practicality, materiality, patience, and the need for tangible results.

A planet is exalted in a specific sign where its qualities are traditionally considered elevated or honored (e.g., Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus). Not the same as domicile — exaltation suggests a guest of honor rather than a resident.

A planet is in fall when it occupies the sign opposite its exaltation (e.g., Sun in Libra, Saturn in Aries). In the tradition, this represents a position of discomfort — not inability, but the need to find unconventional ways to express the planet's function.

The lowest point of the ecliptic at birth, opposite the Midheaven. Marks the cusp of the 4th house. In astrology, it symbolizes roots, family of origin, private life, and psychological foundations.

The largest planet in the solar system, with an orbital period of about 12 years. In the astrological tradition, Jupiter symbolizes expansion, meaning, abundance, and the search for a broader understanding. Rules Sagittarius.

The fifth sign. Fixed fire. Traditionally linked to self-expression, creativity, and the courage to be visible. Leo symbolizes the vital need to create and to be recognized for what one creates. Ruled by the Sun.

The seventh sign. Cardinal air. Traditionally linked to relationships, aesthetics, and the negotiation between self and other. Libra symbolizes the search for equilibrium — which is never fully achieved. Ruled by Venus.

Not a physical body but a mathematical point: the lunar apogee, or the point in the Moon's orbit farthest from Earth. In astrology, Lilith symbolizes the rejected, repressed, or untamed aspects of the psyche.

The fourth planet, notable for its reddish appearance caused by iron oxide. In astrology, Mars symbolizes drive, assertion, conflict, and the energy directed toward action. Rules Aries.

The smallest planet and closest to the Sun, with an orbital period of 88 days. In astrology, Mercury symbolizes communication, thought processes, and how information is gathered and exchanged. Rules Gemini and Virgo.

The highest point of the ecliptic at the moment of birth, marking the cusp of the 10th house in most house systems. In astrology, the MC symbolizes public life, vocation, reputation, and the direction one is growing toward.

Earth's natural satellite, completing an orbit every 27.3 days. In the astrological tradition, the Moon symbolizes emotional needs, instinctive responses, and the inner life that operates beneath conscious awareness.

One of three modalities. The mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces — closing each season. In astrology, mutable energy symbolizes adaptability, flexibility, and the capacity to transition and transform.

The eighth planet, discovered in 1846. Orbital period of about 165 years. In modern astrology, Neptune symbolizes imagination, dissolution, transcendence, and the boundary between clarity and illusion. Rules Pisces.

One of two points where the Moon's orbital plane intersects the ecliptic. Not a physical body. In astrology, the North Node symbolizes the direction of growth, unfamiliar territory, and qualities being developed in this lifetime.

An aspect of 180° between two planets. In astrology, oppositions symbolize tension, awareness through contrast, and the need to integrate two opposing principles. Traditionally considered challenging but productive.

The margin of degrees within which an aspect is considered active. For example, if the orb for a conjunction is 8°, two planets at 10° Aries and 17° Aries (7° apart) are still in conjunction. Tighter orbs indicate stronger aspects.

A planet with no essential dignity — not in its domicile, exaltation, detriment, or fall. In the tradition, a peregrine planet is a wanderer with no particular advantage or disadvantage, operating on its own terms.

The twelfth and final sign. Mutable water. Associated with dissolution, compassion, and the return to the undifferentiated. Pisces symbolizes the surrender that precedes renewal. Ruled by Neptune.

Reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006, with an orbital period of about 248 years. In modern astrology, Pluto symbolizes deep transformation, power dynamics, and the process of destruction that precedes regeneration. Rules Scorpio.

An aspect of 150°. In astrology, the quincunx symbolizes an awkward relationship between two principles that share no element or modality. It requires constant adjustment rather than resolution.

An apparent backward motion of a planet as seen from Earth — an optical effect caused by the relative speeds of Earth and the planet in their orbits. Astronomically, no planet actually moves backward. In the astrological tradition, retrograde periods are associated with review, revision, and internalization of the planet's themes.

The ninth sign. Mutable fire. Traditionally linked to meaning-seeking, expansion, and the philosophical impulse. Sagittarius symbolizes the arrow that points beyond the known. Ruled by Jupiter.

The sixth planet, known for its ring system. Orbital period of about 29.5 years. In astrology, Saturn symbolizes structure, limitation, discipline, and the slow maturation that time demands. Rules Capricorn.

The eighth sign. Fixed water. Associated with transformation, depth, and the willingness to confront what others avoid. Scorpio symbolizes the process of dying to one form so another can emerge. Ruled by Pluto.

A minor aspect of 30°. In astrology, the semi-sextile connects adjacent signs and symbolizes a subtle, often overlooked connection between two areas of life.

A minor aspect of 45°. In astrology, it carries a quality similar to the square but at a lower intensity — a background friction that may not be immediately obvious.

A minor aspect of 135°. In astrology, it symbolizes a subtle but persistent irritation — less dramatic than a square, but harder to ignore over time.

An aspect of 60°. In astrology, sextiles symbolize opportunity and cooperative potential — less automatic than the trine, requiring some effort to activate.

A zodiac system anchored to the actual positions of the constellations rather than the seasons. Used primarily in Vedic (Jyotish) astrology. Due to precession, the tropical and sidereal zodiacs have diverged by about 24° as of the 21st century.

A chart cast for the exact moment the Sun returns to its natal position each year — the astronomical birthday. In astrology, the solar return chart is used to examine themes and patterns for the year ahead.

The point diametrically opposite the North Node. In astrology, the South Node symbolizes familiar patterns, innate abilities, and tendencies that come naturally but may need to be released for further growth.

An aspect of 90°. In astrology, squares symbolize friction, internal tension, and the pressure that often drives action and growth. The aspect of creative struggle.

A concentration of three or more planets in the same sign or house. In astrology, a stellium amplifies the themes of that sign or house, creating a strong emphasis in the chart.

Astronomically, the star at the center of our solar system. In astrology, it represents the core identity, vitality, and conscious purpose. The Sun sign is determined by the Sun's position in the zodiac at birth.

The comparison of two natal charts by overlaying one on the other to examine the aspects formed between them. Used in the astrological tradition to explore relational dynamics — not to predict compatibility, but to map the points of contact and tension between two people.

The second sign. Fixed earth. Associated with sustenance, material security, and sensory experience. In the astrological tradition, Taurus symbolizes the capacity to build, sustain, and value. Ruled by Venus.

The current position of a planet in the sky as it moves through the zodiac. When a transiting planet forms an aspect to a point in the natal chart, the tradition interprets this as a period of activation for the themes of that natal point.

An aspect of 120°, connecting planets in signs of the same element. In astrology, trines symbolize flow, ease, and natural talent — though that ease can sometimes become complacency.

The zodiac system used in most Western astrology, anchored to the seasons: 0° Aries begins at the spring equinox. It is based on the Earth's relationship to the Sun, not to the background stars. This is the system Astrian uses.

The seventh planet, discovered in 1781. Orbital period of 84 years. In modern astrology, Uranus symbolizes disruption, liberation, innovation, and sudden change. Rules Aquarius.

The second planet from the Sun, often visible as the morning or evening star. In astrology, Venus symbolizes values, attraction, aesthetics, and how one relates to pleasure and beauty. Rules Taurus and Libra.

The sixth sign. Mutable earth. Associated with discernment, service, and the refinement of craft. Virgo symbolizes the capacity to distinguish what is useful from what is not. Ruled by Mercury.

A period when the Moon has made its last major aspect in the current sign and will not form another before entering the next sign. Astronomically precise and calculable. In the astrological tradition, VOC periods are associated with a pause — a time when actions may not produce expected results.
