Lakefront Light: Chicago at Sunrise

Chicago sits on the western shore of Lake Michigan, facing east. The Lakefront Trail runs 26 miles with continuous access to unobstructed lake views. Grant Park offers a clear position for the skyline from the south; the Museum Campus piers extend into the water for full 180-degree panoramics. In winter, ice forms on the lake surface and creates dramatic foregrounds: pressure ridges and ice sheets reflect the pink pre-dawn sky before sunrise. At 41.9°N, golden hour lasts about 40 minutes in summer, thinning to 32 minutes in December.
