Astrian Light

Two hills, two completely different shots

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Edinburgh. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Conselho fotográfico

Calton Hill at sunrise for the New Town and castle silhouette (northeast-facing). Arthur's Seat summit for the full city panorama. Cramond Beach in winter for low-angle Firth of Forth light.

Edinburgh has two viewpoints that give completely different pictures. Calton Hill is in the city center, 100 meters high, facing northeast over the Firth of Forth and southwest over the New Town — the sunrise shot with the castle silhouetted is from here. Arthur's Seat is an extinct volcano 251 meters high on the east side of the city, accessible in about 45 minutes on foot from Holyrood Palace. From the summit, the whole city spreads to the west, with the castle and the firth beyond. The light at 56°N means golden hour in June runs close to 75 minutes. Winter light is low and warm even at midday — January skies here after a front has passed can be extraordinary for long-exposure shots at Cramond Beach, 8 kilometers west on the Firth of Forth.
