Florianópolis: Island Light on the Santa Catarina Coast

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Florianópolis. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Praia da Joaquina at sunrise: face east for direct Atlantic light on the sand and dune line. Morro da Cruz summit at golden hour for the 360-degree island view with the Lagoa and the Atlantic on both sides.

Florianópolis occupies the Ilha de Santa Catarina, connected to the mainland by two bridges. The island has 100 beaches in different orientations, giving photographers a full compass of coastal sunrise and sunset positions. Praia da Joaquina and Praia Mole on the east coast face directly east into the Atlantic for sunrise. On the west side, Lagoa da Conceição, a saltwater lagoon in the middle of the island, provides flat-water reflections. Morro da Cruz, 285 meters above the Lagoa at the island's geographic centre, gives 360-degree views with the ocean visible on both the east and west sides simultaneously. At -28°S, golden hour lasts about 28 minutes in summer. The most reliable photography conditions fall in April and May (austral autumn) when post-summer fronts clear the air and the light angle becomes more oblique.
