Kościuszko Mound summit at sunset for the east-facing Kraków panorama (bus 100, 102 from center). Wawel Castle ramparts for the Vistula river bend below. Planty park walk at golden hour for cathedral and city facade light.
The Kościuszko Mound, built in 1823 to honor the Polish general, is a 34-meter artificial hill at 326 meters total elevation on the western edge of Kraków. It faces east over the city, with the Tatra mountains visible on clear days to the south. The view from its summit is the most complete panorama of Kraków: Wawel Castle on its limestone hill, the old city, and the Vistula river below. Wawel Castle itself, on a natural 50-meter limestone hill, faces east over the river — the ramparts give close-range views of the Cathedral and the bend in the Vistula. The Planty park ring around the old city, where the medieval walls once stood, is a 4-kilometer circular walk that catches afternoon light on the church facades. Golden hour at 50°N runs around 52 minutes in summer.
