Desert Gold: Las Vegas Beyond the Strip

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Las Vegas. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Red Rock Canyon Calico Hills trailhead at sunrise: face east into the formations before the tourist buses arrive. Valley of Fire Fire Wave formation at sunset turns luminescent orange in clean low-angle light.

The Mojave Desert surrounding Las Vegas transforms during golden hour, and the most photogenic light is not on the Strip but 24 kilometers west at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The Calico Hills and red sandstone escarpment face east, receiving full warm light during the first 35 minutes after sunrise; the 14-kilometer scenic drive loops past formations standing 600 meters above the desert floor. The Las Vegas Strip, visible from Frenchman Mountain to the east, turns amber against the Spring Mountains as the sun sets to the west. Valley of Fire State Park (80 km northeast) has the deepest red sandstone in Nevada; Beehive and Elephant Rock formations at sunset offer some of the most intense desert colour in the US Southwest. At 36.2°N, golden hour lasts 37 minutes. Desert photography works best October through April.
