Porto Alegre: the Guaíba Lakeshore at Sunset

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Porto Alegre. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Usina do Gasômetro waterfront at sunset: face west over Lago Guaíba from the riverside platform. The 100-meter chimney and industrial facade frame the sky; the still lake doubles the colour. March through May for the richest post-summer tones.

Porto Alegre sits on the east shore of Lago Guaíba, technically a river lake formed by five rivers converging before entering the Lagoa dos Patos. The Guaíba sunset is the defining visual identity of the city: the lake faces west, and from the Usina do Gasômetro cultural centre on the waterfront (a converted 1920s power station with a 100-meter chimney), the western horizon is unobstructed. The Guaíba is 50 kilometers wide at the point where it meets the Lagoa dos Patos, creating an almost oceanic western horizon for sunset. At -30°S, golden hour lasts about 30 minutes. March through May (austral autumn) consistently produces the most saturated sunset colours as the sun tracks further southwest and the air clears after summer humidity.
