Hanoi: Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter at Dawn

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Hanoi. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Hoan Kiem Lake north end at dawn: face south for the Turtle Tower and pagoda reflections in flat water. Long Bien Bridge mid-span at sunrise for the Red River floodplain with the city in soft warm haze behind.

Hanoi sits in the Red River delta at 10 meters elevation, 100 kilometers from the Gulf of Tonkin. Hoan Kiem Lake, at the geographic centre of the city, holds the Turtle Tower on a small island and the Ngoc Son Temple connected by a red bridge to the north shore; at dawn the lake surface is glass-flat before the wind builds, and the reflections of the Turtle Tower and surrounding trees create a circular composition. The Old Quarter (36 Streets), north of the lake, has narrow shop-house facades facing east and west; early morning light before 7am finds the streets empty and the colonial-era buildings catching golden colour on upper floors. The Long Bien Bridge (1903, French colonial), spanning the Red River 2 kilometers northeast, gives a mid-span view of the river floodplain glowing orange at sunrise. At 21°N, golden hour lasts 22 minutes.
