Jakarta: Colonial Harbor Sunrises Above the Java Sea

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Jakarta. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Sunda Kelapa harbor at sunrise: face northeast along the pier for the phinisi schooners in warm direct light, with the Kota Tua warehouses visible to the left. In the dry season (June–September), the air clears enough for silhouettes with saturated colour; in the wet season, haze softens but does not eliminate the scene.

Jakarta sits at 6.2°S near the equator on the northwest coast of Java, facing the Java Sea to the north. Golden hour lasts approximately 21 minutes year-round. The most photogenic location is Sunda Kelapa, the historic Dutch colonial port, where traditional Bugis phinisi schooners are moored alongside the restored warehouses of Kota Tua (Old Batavia). The harbor faces north-northeast; sunrise illuminates the wooden ships and the warehouses simultaneously from the east. The Ancol waterfront (7 km of north-facing coast) provides wider ocean horizons for unobstructed sunsets. Air quality varies significantly — clearer conditions occur in the dry season (June–September).
