Mumbai: Marine Drive at Sunset, Gateway at Dawn

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Mumbai. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Marine Drive Nariman Point end at sunset: face west along the curved promenade with the Arabian Sea on the right. Gateway of India at dawn: face east from the pier for the arch silhouette against the harbour sunrise over Elephanta Island.

Mumbai occupies a peninsula extending south into the Arabian Sea, giving it a west-facing coastline for sunset and an east-facing harbour for sunrise. Marine Drive, the 3.5-kilometer seafront promenade facing west, curves from Nariman Point to Malabar Hill; at golden hour the curved road and the Arabian Sea create one of the most recognizable sunset compositions in South Asia. Gateway of India, the 1924 arch monument on the harbour front, faces east across the harbour toward Elephanta Island; sunrise comes over the water directly at the arch. Bandra-Worli Sea Link, the cable-stayed bridge connecting two western suburbs, frames westward sunset from both towers. At 19.1°N, golden hour lasts 22 minutes. Mumbai's monsoon season (June through September) effectively closes outdoor photography for weeks at a time, while November through February delivers the clearest skies.
