Nadi: Mamanuca Island Silhouettes Over the Fijian Lagoon

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Nadi. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Denarau waterfront facing west-southwest at sunset: the Mamanuca island silhouettes appear low on the horizon above the lagoon. Use a graduated ND to balance the bright sky and dark lagoon foreground. For a cleaner horizon, take a water taxi to the outer edge of Denarau and shoot from the open waterway.

Nadi sits at 17.8°S on the western coast of Viti Levu, Fiji, facing the Mamanuca Island group (18 low-lying islands on a barrier reef, 15–40 km offshore). Golden hour lasts roughly 22 minutes. At sunset, the Mamanuca silhouettes punctuate the western horizon; from Denarau Island or the Wailoaloa Beach area the island cluster appears low above the lagoon water at different angles depending on position. The Sabeto mountain range rises directly behind Nadi to 1,100 m and backs sunrise compositions from the east. Natadola Beach and the Coral Coast (90 km southeast) have more dramatic scenery facing west-southwest. Fiji dry season (May–October) produces cleaner skies for sunset.
