Perth: the Indian Ocean and the Western Light

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Perth. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Cottesloe Beach at sunset: face due west for the Indian Ocean horizon and the Rottnest Island silhouette in the distance. South Perth foreshore at sunrise: face west across the Swan River for the Perth CBD skyline reflected in still morning water.

Perth faces west into the Indian Ocean — the only Australian mainland capital with a west-facing ocean horizon, giving unambiguous ocean sunsets from the beach. Cottesloe Beach, 10 kilometres southwest of the CBD, faces directly west into the open Indian Ocean: the flat horizon produces the cleanest sunset silhouettes in Australia. Kings Park, a native bushland reserve on Mt Eliza (50 m), overlooks the Swan River and the CBD from the west; the river reflects the eastern sky at dawn. Rottnest Island, 19 kilometres offshore to the west, appears as a low silhouette from Cottesloe in clear conditions, adding depth to the sunset frame. The Swan River in South Perth reflects the city skyline at sunrise. At -32°S, golden hour lasts about 31 minutes. September through November (austral spring) stabilises the sea-breeze cycle and gives the clearest ocean photography conditions.
