Auckland: the Volcanic Harbour and Rangitoto at Dawn
Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Auckland. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.
Photo tip
Devonport waterfront at sunrise: face northeast across Waitemata Harbour for the Rangitoto cone framed between the sea and the morning sky. Mt Eden summit rim at golden hour: face north for the Waitemata Harbour and the CBD with the Gulf islands behind.
Auckland occupies a narrow volcanic isthmus between two harbours: Waitemata to the north and east, opening onto the Hauraki Gulf and the Pacific, and Manukau to the south and west, facing the Tasman Sea. Rangitoto Island, a 600-year-old basaltic shield volcano 8 kilometres northeast across Waitemata, is the defining landmark: the symmetrical 260-metre cone rises directly across the harbour from Devonport village. From the Devonport waterfront, the view northeast toward Rangitoto at sunrise puts the cone between the sea and the eastern sky. Mt Eden (196 m), the largest dormant volcanic cone in the city, sits 3 kilometres southeast of the CBD and gives 360-degree views across both harbours and toward the Coromandel Peninsula to the east. At -36.9°S, golden hour lasts about 39 minutes. April through June (austral autumn) gives the clearest light and the most consistent photography conditions.
