Sonoran Desert Light: Phoenix at the Edge of the City
Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Phoenix. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.
Photo tip
Camelback Mountain Echo Canyon trailhead at sunrise: arrive well before dawn; the summit takes 1.5 hours. Dobbins Lookout, South Mountain, at sunset for the full valley panoramic facing north over Phoenix.
Phoenix sits at 330 meters in the Sonoran Desert, ringed by mountain parks that provide desert photography at the city's edge. Camelback Mountain (819 m) rises directly in the city, its red sandstone and granite faces turning luminescent orange at golden hour. South Mountain Park, the largest municipal park in the US, covers 7,000 hectares directly south: from Dobbins Lookout at 680 meters, the full Phoenix Basin spreads to the north at sunset. The Superstition Mountains, 50 kilometers east, are the region's photogenic peak cluster: from Usery Mountain Regional Park at sunrise, they receive direct warm light with Phoenix behind. At 33.4°N, golden hour lasts about 34 minutes. October through April is the productive season, with saguaro silhouettes adding distinctive desert texture to every frame.
