Portland's Two Volcanoes at Golden Hour

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Portland. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Conselho fotográfico

West Hills viewpoint above Washington Park at sunrise: align Hood's summit in the east with the city below. East bank of the Willamette near Hawthorne Bridge at sunset for river reflections and both bridges in frame.

Portland sits between Mount Hood to the east (3,429 m) and Mount St. Helens to the north (2,549 m), giving sunrise and sunset photography a volcanic backdrop. Hood rises directly east of the city: from the west hills viewpoints above the Japanese Garden, sunrise alpenglow turns the summit pink before the city receives any light. The Hawthorne Bridge and Steel Bridge frame the Willamette River reflections at golden hour; the bridges are spaced so the river carries warm sky colour between them from a position on the east bank. At 45.5°N, golden hour lasts 48 minutes in summer, and the city sits far enough north that June solstice sunset light at 9:05pm is still fully golden. Columbia River Gorge, 30 kilometers east, channels sunrise light through basalt walls; Multnomah Falls gets dramatic directional light from the east in the first hour after dawn.
