Astrian Light

Valparaíso: Hillside Colour on the Pacific Shore

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Valparaíso. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Cerro Concepción upper streets at sunset: face northwest for the Pacific bay and the port in warm light. Ascensor Artillería upper esplanade for the broadest bay panoramic facing northwest over the container cranes and the open ocean.

Valparaíso spreads across 42 cerros (hills) rising steeply from a narrow bay on the Chilean Pacific coast. The city faces northwest into the Pacific; sunset is over open ocean, and the colourful hillside houses glow amber in western light. The ascensores (funiculars, 1883-1914) connect the port area with the upper cerros; from the upper stations of Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, the panoramic view northwest covers the entire bay, the port cranes, and the Pacific horizon. Cerro Artillería (upper esplanade at 80 m), reached by the Ascensor Artillería, faces northwest over the bay toward Playa Ancha. Pacific fog can close the bay view in the mornings, but typically burns off before noon. At -33°S, golden hour lasts about 34 minutes. Autumn (March through May) produces the richest sunset colours as the sun moves further southwest and the air clears after summer humidity.
