Vientiane: Mekong Sunsets at the Golden Stupa Capital

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Vientiane. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Conselho fotográfico

Mekong riverfront facing northwest at sunset: the sun sets over Thailand and its last light tracks along the river surface for a full minute before dropping below the horizon. In February and March, the dry-season sandbars emerge and add foreground texture for wide-angle compositions.

Vientiane sits at 18°N on the south bank of the Mekong, which forms the border with Thailand. Golden hour lasts roughly 22 minutes. The riverfront promenade (Chan Arun Road) faces northwest following the river bend, so sunsets strike almost parallel to the bank and illuminate both the water surface and the Thai mountains beyond. The national symbol, Pha That Luang (a 45-metre gilded stupa 4 km northeast of the river), is best photographed at sunrise when the gold surface catches direct light. The Patuxai monument at 24 m provides a rooftop view toward the stupa. Dry-season (January–April) sandbars appear in the river, adding foreground texture at the waterfront.
