Wadi Rum: Red Desert Sandstone at Sunset in the Valley of the Moon

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Wadi Rum. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Open desert plain 3 km north of Rum village at sunset: face west-northwest for the main sandstone inselberg ridge in maximum red saturation with the sunset sky behind. Place a jeep or camel silhouette in the foreground for scale. The final 8 minutes before the sun touches the horizon produce the deepest crimson.

Wadi Rum sits at 29.6°N in the southern Jordanian desert at 900 m elevation, a protected area (UNESCO World Heritage) of red sandstone and granite inselbergs rising 300–700 m from a flat sand plain. Golden hour lasts around 29 minutes. The sandstone and desert sand respond to low-angle light with maximum saturation: the red-orange spectrum deepens from ochre in midday light to deep crimson in the last 10 minutes before sunset. The principal viewpoints are the dunes southeast of Rum village (facing west-northwest for the rock formations and sunset sky), Jebel Burdah arch (a natural arch at 1,754 m, by guided climb), and the open sand plain north of the camp area for unobstructed 360° views. Clearest conditions occur in winter and spring (November–April); summer heat reduces usable hours.
