Banff: Rocky Mountain Golden Hour Above the Bow Valley

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Banff. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Moraine Lake at sunrise: position at the rock pile viewpoint above the lake outlet, facing northwest for the Ten Peaks reflection in the water. Arrive no later than 90 minutes before sunrise in July and August — the trail fills before first light. In October, the larch forests turn golden and match the sky.

Banff National Park occupies the Canadian Rockies at 51.2°N, with the town of Banff at 1,383 m in the Bow Valley. Golden hour lasts approximately 47 minutes. The classic compositions centre on Moraine Lake (Valley of the Ten Peaks viewpoint) and Lake Louise (3 km from the Chateau): both lakes reflect the surrounding peaks. Moraine Lake at 1,884 m faces roughly northwest; sunrise strikes the Ten Peaks first at about 45 minutes after civil dawn, illuminating the rock tower above the blue-green water. Lake Louise faces southwest; sunset strikes the Victoria Glacier from the front. The Sulphur Mountain Gondola upper station (2,281 m) gives a 360° view of the ranges and the valley below. Summer crowds require pre-dawn arrival for unobstructed lake positions; October larches add golden foreground.
