Kathmandu Valley: Himalayan Peaks at First Light

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Kathmandu. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Swayambhunath stupa east viewpoint at sunrise: face east over Kathmandu for the valley floor and distant snows. Nagarkot viewpoint at dawn (2,175 m): the widest Himalayan arc from Annapurna to Kanchenjunga in a single frame.

Kathmandu sits at 1,400 meters in a bowl-shaped valley of the Middle Hills, with the high Himalayan wall visible to the north on clear mornings. The summit of Langtang Lirung (7,227 m) rises directly north; on the clearest winter days, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and the Annapurna range appear to the northwest. Nagarkot, 32 kilometers east at 2,175 meters, offers the widest unobstructed Himalayan panoramic near the valley: the arc from Annapurna to Kanchenjunga spans 200 kilometers in a single frame. Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) at 77 meters above the valley floor faces east and southeast; sunrise over Kathmandu and the distant snows behind is the classic valley shot. At 27.7°N, golden hour runs about 28 minutes, and November through February offers the highest frequency of clear Himalayan views.
