Kyoto: First Light Through the Bamboo and Torii

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Kyoto. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

Fushimi Inari lower gates at sunrise: arrive by 5:30am to walk the first torii tunnel in direct east light without crowds. Arashiyama bamboo grove at dawn or dusk for filtered canopy light.

Kyoto sits in a basin surrounded by mountains on three sides: Higashiyama (Eastern Mountains) to the east, Kitayama to the north, and Arashiyama to the northwest. Fushimi Inari-Taisha, with its 10,000 vermillion torii gates climbing Mount Inari (233 m), faces east and receives direct golden sunrise light when the gates are empty before 6am. The Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) reflects in its mirror pond; morning light from the east catches the gold leaf at its brightest angle. Arashiyama bamboo grove, in the northwest quarter, filters slanted golden light through the canopy at either end of the day. At 35°N, golden hour lasts about 35 minutes. November draws the most photogenic conditions: maple foliage turns red across the temple gardens and the morning mist settles in the basin before burning off by 9am.
