Melbourne: the Yarra and the Bay at Golden Hour
Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Melbourne. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.
Photo tip
St Kilda Pier at sunset: face west over Port Phillip Bay for the open sky horizon and the fairy penguins returning at dusk. Princes Bridge at sunrise: face east toward the CBD for the full Melbourne skyline reflected in the Yarra in first golden light.
Melbourne sits on the north bank of the Yarra River where it meets Port Phillip Bay, a large inland sea with a narrow entrance to the south. The west-facing bayfront at St Kilda (10 kilometres south of the CBD) places the sun over the bay at sunset: from St Kilda Pier, the open western horizon produces the most extended sunset view in central Melbourne. Princes Bridge on the Yarra, 800 metres from the bay, reflects the eastern sky at sunrise with the city skyline behind. The Dandenong Ranges, 50 kilometres east, provide a low blue hill silhouette in morning light. At -37.8°S, golden hour extends to about 40 minutes — longer than most European cities at comparable latitude. March through May (austral autumn) clears the summer humidity and produces the most saturated post-storm light on the river.
