Conselho fotográfico
Port Hills Summit Road at sunrise: face north for the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps in first light from the ridge. Sumner Beach at dawn: face east for the open Pacific horizon and early light on the surf before the sea breeze develops.
Christchurch sits on the Canterbury Plains between the Southern Alps to the west and the Pacific Ocean 10 kilometres to the east. The Port Hills, a 460-metre volcanic ridge directly south of the city, divide Christchurch from Lyttelton Harbour and the Banks Peninsula beyond. The Summit Road running along the ridge gives the full panorama: Christchurch and the Canterbury Plains extending to the Alps on one side, Lyttelton Harbour and the Pacific on the other. Sumner Beach (10 km east of the CBD) faces directly east into the Pacific for unobstructed sunrise over the sea. The Avon Ōtākaro River winds through the Botanic Gardens in the CBD, reflecting the western sky at golden hour in the willows. At -43.5°S, golden hour lasts about 50 minutes. Autumn (March through May) turns the Hagley Park deciduous trees amber and shortens the long summer evenings into more oblique light angles.
