Astrian Light
Cairns: the Coral Sea Sunrise at the Reef Gateway
Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Cairns. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.
Photo tip
Cairns Esplanade boardwalk at sunrise: face northeast for the direct Coral Sea horizon and the first light across the tidal flats. Atherton Tablelands (1,000 m, 90-minute drive southwest) at dawn for volcanic crater lakes in highland mist before the coast clears.
Cairns sits at the edge of the Wet Tropics rainforest on Trinity Inlet, a tidal estuary opening northeast into the Coral Sea. The Esplanade lagoon and its 1.2-kilometre boardwalk face northeast directly into the Coral Sea sunrise. The Great Barrier Reef — the largest living structure on earth — lies 50 kilometres offshore, accessible by boat from the Cairns marina. Cape Tribulation, 90 kilometres north, is where tropical rainforest meets the reef directly at the beach: the only place where two UNESCO World Heritage sites share a shoreline. The Atherton Tablelands, 1,000 metres above the city to the southwest, offer volcanic crater lake reflections and highland wildlife in early morning mist. At -16.9°S, golden hour lasts only 23 minutes. The dry season (May through October) provides clear skies; the wet season (November through April) brings dramatic storm light and deep green canopy.
