Hobart: kunanyi/Mt Wellington and the Derwent Estuary

Hora dourada, hora azul e crepúsculo em Hobart. Dados astronômicos NASA JPL DE441.

Photo tip

kunanyi/Mt Wellington Pinnacle at sunrise: face east for the Derwent estuary and the Tasman Sea 1,271 m below with the city beneath the cloud layer. Sullivan's Cove waterfront at golden hour for the sandstone warehouses in warm northeastern light.

Hobart sits on the west bank of the Derwent River estuary, with kunanyi/Mt Wellington (1,271 m) rising immediately to the west above the city. The summit plateau sits above the cloud layer on most clear days; from the Pinnacle, the view spans 360 degrees from the Derwent estuary and the D'Entrecasteaux Channel south to the open ocean horizon. The Salamanca Place waterfront on Sullivan's Cove faces northeast: at sunrise the sandstone warehouse facades catch warm northeastern light directly. Battery Point, the oldest residential district, sits on a peninsula facing east and north over the cove. At -42.9°S, golden hour lasts about 48 minutes. The mountain creates its own weather, but clear summit conditions reward the drive; autumn (March through May) produces the most saturated estuary light before the shorter winter days.
