Greatest eclipse

South Atlantic Ocean

An annular solar eclipse with an exceptionally long ring of fire — up to 7m 51s. The path begins in the South Pacific, crosses the southern tip of Chile and Argentina (Punta Arenas, Ushuaia), sweeps across the South Atlantic, briefly clips the southern tip of South Africa near Cape Town, and ends in Antarctica. Because February places Earth near perihelion, the Moon appears slightly smaller than average, producing a wide, brilliant annular ring rather than totality.
