Abu Dhabi: the Grand Mosque and the Gulf at Golden Hour

Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Abu Dhabi. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.

Photo tip

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at sunrise: position south of the main entrance for the reflecting pools to capture the domes and the warm sky behind. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise for the full blue-to-gold transition.

Abu Dhabi occupies a T-shaped island in the Persian Gulf, with the Corniche promenade facing northwest along the coast. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, 8 kilometers south of the city centre, is built on a raised platform; its 82 white marble domes are designed to reflect sunlight at different times of day. At sunrise and sunset the marble shifts from grey-white to warm rose-gold depending on the angle and the reflecting pools double the effect. The Corniche Breakwater gives a west-facing view over the gulf for sunset light on the city skyline. Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest building in Abu Dhabi (18th century fort), sits in the urban core and catches warm morning light from the southeast. At 24.5°N, golden hour lasts about 24 minutes. Winter months (November through March) offer clear skies and temperatures below 30°C.
