Addis Ababa: the Entoto Hills and the Highland Light

Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Addis Ababa. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.

Photo tip

Entoto Hills south-facing viewpoint (3,200 m) at sunrise: face south for the sea-of-cloud effect over Addis Ababa in the highland mist. Holy Trinity Cathedral at golden hour for the Byzantine-influenced facade in warm eastern light before midday crowds arrive.

Addis Ababa sits at 2,355 metres on the central Ethiopian Highlands, one of the highest capital cities in the world. The Entoto Hills (3,200 m) rise directly north of the city: the upper eucalyptus forest is cool at dawn, its scent mixing with the thin highland air. Entoto Maryam Church and the hilltop viewpoints face south over the full extent of the city at sunrise — the highland light at this altitude is notably clear compared to lower cities, and the morning mist in the valley often creates a sea-of-cloud effect across the urban basin. Holy Trinity Cathedral has Byzantine-influenced architecture that catches warm eastern light in early morning. At 9°N, golden hour lasts only 21 minutes. The dry season (October through May) gives the clearest mornings; the rainy season (June through September) can produce dramatic low cloud and post-storm clearing light.
