Boston Harbor Light: Dawn Over the Atlantic
Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Boston. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.
Photo tip
Rowes Wharf at dawn: face east along the harbor for the skyline silhouette and first light. Longfellow Bridge at sunset frames the Charles River reflections with Cambridge in the distance.
Boston Harbor opens to the northeast and east, giving the city a clear oceanic sunrise horizon. The Boston Harbor Islands extend the visible water surface; Boston Light on Little Brewster Island, the oldest lighthouse in the US, is visible from the harbor islands ferry route. Rowes Wharf provides a central position for the harbor skyline at dawn, while Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown frames the harbor from the north. The Charles River separates Boston from Cambridge; sunset over the river from the Harvard Bridge or Longfellow Bridge catches warm light on both banks and the dome of MIT. At 42.4°N, golden hour stretches 42 minutes in summer. Autumn is the strongest season: harbor water calms with northeast winds, and the surrounding foliage from Public Garden trees adds warm foreground colour.
