Chiang Mai: Doi Suthep Above the Morning Mist

Chiang Mai sits in the Ping River valley at 310 meters, surrounded by the Doi Inthanon range to the south (2,565 m, the highest peak in Thailand) and Doi Suthep (1,676 m) rising directly west of the city. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a 14th-century gold-spired temple at 1,073 meters, is visible from most of the city; at sunset the western hillside catches warm light while the city below transitions to shadow. Doi Inthanon National Park, 58 kilometers south, has the Ang Ka Nature Trail at 2,400 meters above the tree line, with 360-degree views of the surrounding ranges at sunrise. The Ping River, running north-south through the city, offers flat-water reflections of the morning sky in winter (November through February) when mist fills the valley. At 18.8°N, golden hour lasts about 22 minutes. The cool season (November through February) is the most photogenic.
