Astrian Light

The canal that never photographs the same way twice

Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Copenhagen. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.

Photo tip

Nyhavn canal at 5am in summer (northeast-facing facades, empty). Amager Strandpark for Øresund sunrise. Langebro bridge at dusk for the harbor and palace tower silhouette.

Nyhavn canal is 400 meters long and faces roughly northeast, which means morning light from May through July hits the colored facades from the northeast and makes the boats and buildings glow before the crowds arrive. By 9am it's full of tourists. Amager Strandpark, a man-made beach park southeast of the city, faces east over the Øresund strait — at sunrise in summer the sun comes up over the strait and the water catches it before everything else. The Knippelsbro bridge between Copenhagen and the island of Amager gives a view of the Old Stock Exchange spire and Christiansborg Palace tower above the harbor. At 56°N, golden hour runs around 70 minutes in summer. The Øresund Bridge to Sweden is visible from the Amager coast on clear days, 16 kilometers away.
