Mount Royal at Dawn: Montreal's High Ground

Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Montreal. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.

Photo tip

Kondiaronk Belvedere at dawn: face east for the downtown skyline in first light. Jacques Cartier Bridge south walkway at sunrise for open river and the central islands in warm morning colour.

Montreal occupies an island in the St. Lawrence River, with Mont Royal, a 233-meter hill at the city's centre, as its defining geographic feature. The Kondiaronk Belvedere on the south face of the mountain faces the downtown skyline directly: at sunrise the glass towers of downtown Montreal catch the first eastern light while the mountain itself remains in pre-dawn shadow. The St. Lawrence opens a broad southern horizon; from the Jacques Cartier Bridge, the sunrise comes directly over the river's central islands. At 45.5°N, golden hour lasts 48 minutes in summer. Quebec winters are severe but photogenic: frost on Mont Royal trees, ice on the St. Lawrence, and low sun at 24 degrees maximum elevation in December.
