Astrian Light
Vesuvius in every frame, whether you planned it or not
Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Naples. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.
Photo tip
Castel Sant'Elmo (Vomero hill, take funicular from Via Toledo) for the harbor–bay–Vesuvius panorama. Parco Virgiliano (Posillipo peninsula) for open-bay views toward the islands. Via Caracciolo seafront at golden hour facing south.
The Bay of Naples faces southwest, and Vesuvius at 1,281 meters is visible to the southeast from most of the city. Any southwest-facing shot includes either the open sea or the volcano on the right edge — sometimes both. Posillipo, the hill district on the western side of the city, has terraces and paths facing south-southwest over the bay. The Parco Virgiliano at the end of the Posillipo peninsula is a public park with unobstructed views toward the islands of Ischia and Procida. Castel Sant'Elmo on Vomero hill at 250 meters gives the classic Naples panorama with the harbor, the bay, and Vesuvius behind — early morning before 8am it's largely empty. Via Caracciolo along the seafront is a straight kilometer from Mergellina to Castel dell'Ovo, both ends of which offer different angles on the bay.
