Osaka Castle and the Bay: Dawn in Two Directions

Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Osaka. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.

Photo tip

Osaka Castle east moat at sunrise: face northwest toward the main tower with eastern light warming the white walls. Tempozan harbor at sunset for the bay and Awaji Island silhouette on the western horizon.

Osaka sits between the Yodo River delta and Osaka Bay to the west, with Osaka Castle at the city's geographic centre. The castle complex faces south from a moated hill; at dawn the main tower receives eastern light that turns its white walls amber for about 20 minutes. Osaka Bay, 10 kilometers west, faces southwest toward Awaji Island; the Tempozan Ferris Wheel and Kaiyukan Aquarium at the harbor anchor sunset compositions. Umeda Sky Building, with its futuristic observation deck at 173 meters, gives a 360-degree city panoramic. Dotonbori canal runs east-west through Namba and reflects neon signs; at golden hour the canal walls carry the last warm light before the electric signs take over. At 34.7°N, golden hour runs about 35 minutes.
