Quebec City: Château Frontenac Light Above the Walled St. Lawrence
Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Quebec City. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.
Photo tip
Terrasse Dufferin at golden hour: face north-northwest along the St. Lawrence for the river bend with the Château Frontenac on the right and the Île d'Orléans visible in the background. In the 20 minutes before sunset, the western turrets go amber while the eastern face is still in shade — a 90-second window of perfect facade contrast.
Quebec City stands at 46.8°N on the cliffs above the St. Lawrence River — the only walled city north of Mexico in North America and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Golden hour lasts about 42 minutes. The Château Frontenac (137 m at the highest turret) crowns the Cap Diamant headland above old Lower Town. The Terrasse Dufferin (promenade below the Château, facing north-northwest over the St. Lawrence) is the classic position: the river bends west and the Château towers above on the right, catching the last direct light before the sun drops behind Upper Town buildings. The Île d'Orléans bridge (5 km east) provides a low-elevation cross-river view of the Upper Town skyline facing northwest. Winter produces spectacular conditions: St. Lawrence ice floes in February–March and the blue-hour citadel in persistent snowfall.
