Tbilisi: Narikala Fortress Above the Kura River
Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Tbilisi. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.
Photo tip
Metekhi Church cliff path at sunrise: stand on the east bank path below Narikala for the old-city hillside in warm early light. Kartlis Deda statue base at golden hour for the westward panoramic over the old town and the Kura River bend.
Tbilisi sits in a gorge where the Mtkvari (Kura) River cuts between two ridge systems at 380 to 500 meters elevation. The old city rises steeply on the eastern bank, crowned by the Narikala Fortress (4th century, 70 meters above river level) and the Metekhi Church on a cliff directly above the water. The Kartlis Deda statue (Mother of Georgia, 20 meters) stands on the Sololaki ridge above the old town; from its base, the panoramic view west covers the entire old city, the Peace Bridge, and the Rike Park waterfront. The Caucasus range, with Shkhara (5,193 m) on the Georgian-Russian border, is visible to the north on winter clear days. Mtatsminda Park, at 770 meters, sits on the forest ridge behind the city with panoramic south and west views. At 41.7°N, golden hour lasts 42 minutes in summer.
