What appears on the horizon when the haze clears
Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Zurich. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.
Photo tip
Üetliberg (take S10 from Zürich HB, 20 min) for city-plus-Alps views — best October to March on clear mornings. Quaibrücke for Lake Zurich reflections at golden hour. Lindenhügel terrace for the Old Town rooftop view facing northwest.
Zurich sits at the northern end of Lake Zurich at 408 meters elevation. On clear days — particularly from November through March when the inversion layer drops — the Alps appear 100 kilometers to the south. Üetliberg, an 870-meter hill southwest of the city accessible in 20 minutes by S-Bahn, gives the best city-plus-Alps panorama when conditions cooperate. The lake runs northwest–southeast over 40 kilometers, and evening light comes down its full length. The Lindenhügel, above the Old Town, gives a smaller but intimate view of the river and church spires from a quiet café terrace facing northwest. The Old Town's church skyline includes Grossmünster (two towers), Fraumünster (a single blue-green spire), and St. Peter (the largest church clock face in Europe). Golden hour at 47°N runs around 44 minutes in summer.
