Aitana Bonmatí

Aitana Bonmatí Conca was born on 18 January 1998 in the area of Sant Pere de Ribes, in the Catalan province of Barcelona, and grew up nearby. Her parents, both language teachers, were noted for having her surnames registered in the order Bonmatí Conca rather than the conventional paternal-first sequence, a small detail that drew comment in the Spanish press years later.

She entered the FC Barcelona academy as a teenager, having played in local Catalan football beforehand, and progressed through the club's youth structure into its senior women's team. There she became one of the central figures of a side that established itself as the dominant force in European women's football, playing as a technical, possession-oriented central midfielder noted for close control, awareness, and arriving in the box.

With Barcelona she won multiple editions of the UEFA Women's Champions League and a long run of Spanish league and cup titles through the late 2010s and into the 2020s. The team's style — built on short passing, positional play, and sustained possession — mirrored the men's tradition associated with the club, and Bonmatí became one of its most recognisable interpreters.

With the Spanish national team she was a key player in the side that won the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, held in Australia and New Zealand, and she was named the tournament's best player. The triumph unfolded alongside a public dispute between many of the players and the national federation over governance and conditions, a controversy that ran in parallel with the sporting success and reshaped the institutional landscape of the women's game in Spain.

In recognition of her form she received the Ballon d'Or Féminin in 2023 and again in 2024, becoming one of the small number of players to win the award in consecutive years, together with The Best FIFA Women's Player honour in the same period. Her emergence coincided with — and helped drive — a rapid rise in attendances, media coverage, and professionalisation across women's football in Spain and Europe.
