Bangkok: Wat Arun at the Hour of Dawn
Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Bangkok. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.
Photo tip
Tha Tien pier on the east bank at sunrise: face west toward Wat Arun with the first light catching the prang and its porcelain surface. Cross on the regular river ferry (3 baht) for a moving perspective of the temple.
Bangkok straddles the Chao Phraya River, which runs roughly north-south through the city. Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) stands on the west bank facing east: at sunrise, the central prang (tower) at 82 meters receives direct eastern light and the embedded porcelain fragments create a sparkling surface visible from the east bank. The view from Tha Tien pier frames the temple against the rising sky. Lumphini Park, Bangkok's largest green space, offers lake reflections in the morning before the humidity builds. At 13.8°N, golden hour lasts only 21 minutes year-round, making the 10 minutes before sunrise equally important for atmosphere. Asiatique riverfront, 5 kilometers downriver, faces west for evening light on the Chao Phraya. The rainy season (May through October) brings dramatic cloud formations that amplify sunset colour.
