Houston and the Gulf Coast Light
Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Houston. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.
Photo tip
McGovern Lake, Hermann Park at sunrise: face north for the Museum District skyline reflected in the lake. Galveston Seawall at sunrise: arrive at the 61st Street Pier for an open eastern horizon over the Gulf.
Houston sits 80 kilometers inland from the Gulf of Mexico on a flat coastal plain. Buffalo Bayou Park cuts through downtown east-west, and at golden hour the bayou surface catches warm sky colour when not obscured by canopy. Galveston Island, 80 kilometers south, gives Houston its nearest open-water coastal sunrise: the seawall faces slightly southeast over the Gulf, and the Pleasure Pier structure provides a foreground element. McGovern Lake in Hermann Park reflects the Museum District skyline from the south, useful for morning light. At 29.8°N, golden hour lasts about 29 minutes. Gulf Coast humidity and sea haze can saturate sunset colours dramatically in the right conditions, turning the western sky purple and orange above the Houston skyline when tropical moisture is present.
