Astrian Light

Pacific Light Over Los Angeles

Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Los Angeles. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.

Photo tip

Griffith Observatory knoll at dusk for skyline and Sign backlit. Santa Monica Pier faces due west; arrive 30 minutes before sunset to claim a clear position before the crowd thickens.

Los Angeles faces the Pacific to the west, delivering consistent sunset photography across one of the longest metropolitan coastlines in North America. From Santa Monica Pier, the sun drops directly into open ocean; during the June solstice the set point moves north toward Malibu, and in December it tracks south toward Palos Verdes. Griffith Observatory sits at 290 meters above Hollywood with a clear sightline to downtown and the Hollywood Sign, both lit from the southwest at golden hour. The marine layer is the variable: thick June Gloom can block the colour entirely until late July, while clear Santa Ana wind conditions in autumn produce the sharpest golden light. Venice Beach canals gain warm colour from the northwest late in the afternoon. At 34°N, golden hour lasts about 37 minutes, longer than Miami but shorter than Seattle.
