The island and the castle, and when they line up
Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Lake Bled. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.
Photo tip
Ojstrica viewpoint (611m, 45-min hike from Ribčev Laz) for the full lake–island–castle–Alps panorama. North shore road at dawn for mist reflections. Rowing boat to Bled Island church (rent at north shore boat dock) for close-up island shots.
Lake Bled is a glacial lake in the Julian Alps of Slovenia, 475 meters above sea level, with a small island church (Church of the Assumption, 15th century) at its center and Bled Castle (607 meters, 130 meters above the lake surface) on a cliff on the north shore. The lake faces west — sunset light comes from the northwest and hits the island church and the western face of the Julian Alps. The viewpoint above the lake from Ojstrica hill (611 meters, 45-minute hike from the south shore) faces northwest over the entire lake — island, castle, and mountain skyline in one frame. The north shore road provides varied angles at lake level. Morning mist on the lake in late autumn lifts between 8am and 10am, creating conditions that are among the best in Slovenia. Rowing boats to the island church are available from the north shore.
