Born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, the son of Tito Martínez, a gardener, and Lysaurie Ocasio, an educator. He grew up in the Almirante Sur neighborhood of Vega Baja. He attended the Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos school in Barceloneta and later the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo, where he studied audiovisual communications.
He worked as a bagger at a supermarket while releasing music on SoundCloud between 2013 and 2016. His early tracks — released pseudonymously as Bad Bunny, a name he took from a childhood photograph in which he appeared dressed as a bunny and unhappy about it — circulated widely on the platform before reaching the attention of record labels. DJ Luian discovered him through SoundCloud and signed him to his record label Hear This Music in 2016.
His feature appearance on Jhay Cortez's single Sensaciona (2016) reached a broader audience, and a feature on Ozuna's Dime Si Te Acuerdas the same year extended his visibility.
