Venus Retrograde 2026
October 3 – November 13 · 8°29’ Scorpio → 22°52’ Libra
What is actually happening
Venus does not move backward. This point is worth stating plainly before anything else.
The mechanism: Earth and Venus both orbit the Sun in the same direction. Venus sits closer to the Sun and moves faster in absolute terms, completing a full orbit every 225 days compared to Earth's 365. Because of the difference in orbital speed and radius, the two planets align geometrically in the same configuration every 583.9 days. This is the Venus synodic period.
During the alignment, Earth's line of sight to Venus shifts relative to the background of fixed stars in a way that makes Venus appear to slow, stop, and reverse course. The phenomenon is purely geometric. Think of two runners on a circular track: when the faster runner overtakes the slower one, the slower runner appears to drift backward relative to the faster runner's frame of reference. No one is actually moving backward.
The retrograde period itself lasts about 40 days on average. This one runs 41 days: October 3 to November 13, 2026. Venus begins moving backward (as seen from Earth) at 8°29′ Scorpio, retreats through early Scorpio into late Libra, and stations direct at 22°52′ Libra. The full shadow cycle extends from August 31, when Venus first crosses 22°52′ Libra heading in, to December 15, when it clears 8°29′ Scorpio heading out.
Venus retrogrades happen every 18 months or so. Over eight years, they trace a near-perfect pentagram pattern as seen from Earth, returning to similar zodiac positions. The previous Venus retrograde that overlapped significantly with Scorpio was in 2018 (Oct 5 – Nov 16). Before that: 2010.

The five-phase breakdown below covers the complete shadow cycle: from when Venus first crosses the retrograde degree (pre-shadow), through the retrograde period itself, to when it finally clears that same degree moving forward again (post-shadow).

Scorpio and Libra
This retrograde begins in early Scorpio and retreats into late Libra before stationing direct. Two adjacent signs with adjacent but distinct symbolic registers.
Libra, in astrological tradition, is associated with equilibrium, partnership, aesthetic judgment, and contractual relationships. The seventh house in most whole-sign systems: the domain of visible alliances, negotiated agreements, and one-on-one relating. Libra asks questions about fairness, proportion, and what two parties owe each other.
Scorpio sits adjacent but operates differently. The eighth house domain in traditional symbolism: shared resources, intimacy, the systems that form when two people or entities merge financially or physically. Where Libra negotiates at the surface, Scorpio engages with what happens after the agreement is in place, when actual stakes appear.
The retrograde arc begins by moving into that Scorpio territory, then reverses back through Libra. The traditional interpretation reads this as: starting to examine something with more depth and intensity, then pulling back to revisit the relational framework first. Venus returns to the same Scorpio degrees in December, moving direct.
What this means in practice depends entirely on what those degrees mean in your specific chart. The general symbolism is a starting point. Your chart tells the rest.
By rising sign
The house that Venus retrograde moves through depends on your rising sign (ascendant), not your Sun sign. Rising sign determines which house corresponds to each zodiac sign in your chart. The table below uses whole-sign houses, the oldest and most common house system.
These are factual descriptions of which areas of life the transit crosses. They are not predictions of what will happen.
Whole-sign houses assume each house occupies exactly one sign. If you use a different house system (Placidus, Koch, etc.), some of these descriptions may shift. The core idea remains: find the house(s) that Libra and early Scorpio occupy in your chart, and those are the thematic areas Venus retrograde passes through.
What Venus retrograde is not
A significant amount of popular astrology content around Venus retrograde is incorrect, or at best unverifiable. A few specific points worth naming:
Venus retrograde does not cause breakups. Relationships that end during Venus retrograde end for the same reasons relationships always end. There is no mechanism by which the apparent reversal of a planet's motion would cause human relational outcomes.
It is not universally “bad” for relationships or finances. The astrological tradition that associates retrograde periods with revision does not frame them as harmful, only as a different phase in a cycle. The “don't start anything new” advice is a modern oversimplification of that tradition.
You do not need to avoid signing contracts, starting relationships, or making purchases during this period. Astrian does not make those kinds of recommendations. The tradition can be used as a reflective framework without being used as a behavioral prohibition.
Astronomical note: Venus retrograde is an apparent motion. Venus does not actually reverse direction. The phenomenon is a line-of-sight effect caused by the relative orbital speeds of Earth and Venus. The astrological tradition associates this period with themes of revision in relationships and values. This is symbolic, not causal. No peer-reviewed research supports astrological claims as predictive tools.
Where does it fall in your chart?
The rising-sign table above gives the general house range. But the actual degrees Venus retrograde crosses (22°52′ Libra to 8°29′ Scorpio) may conjunct, square, trine, or oppose specific planets in your natal chart. That's where the symbolism gets specific.
The transit chart tool below lets you calculate where Venus retrograde falls relative to your natal chart. Set the date to October 3 for the station retrograde, or November 13 for the station direct, to see Venus's exact position against your chart.
