Diamond Head at Dawn: Honolulu's Short Golden Hour
Golden hour, blue hour, and twilight times in Honolulu. NASA JPL DE441 astronomical data.
Photo tip
Diamond Head summit trail (allow 90 min from trailhead): arrive 45 minutes before sunrise for the steep path. Makapu'u Point faces due east for the purest sunrise on Oahu; the overlook rock arch frames the horizon.
Honolulu faces south and southeast, placing Waikiki Beach along a coastline that runs northeast-southwest. The beach does not face east: sunrise strikes from the left side of the shore rather than head-on. Diamond Head crater, at 232 meters, sits directly east of Waikiki; from the summit trail the panoramic view covers the full southeast coastline, Waikiki, and downtown Honolulu catching the first light over open Pacific. Makapu'u Point, the easternmost tip of Oahu on the island's windward side, faces directly east and receives the sunrise ahead of every other spot on the island. At 21.3°N, golden hour lasts only 23 minutes year-round. The late-morning tradewind haze is absent in the first 30 minutes after sunrise, giving clean colour rendition before atmospheric diffusion sets in.
