Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaiuti de' Galilei was born on 15 February 1564 in Pisa, in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany — the same year Michelangelo died and William Shakespeare was born. His father, Vincenzo Galilei, was a musician and music theorist of some distinction, a lutenist who conducted experiments on the relationship between string tension, length, and pitch; Galileo later acknowledged that his own experimental method owed something to his father's approach to acoustics. His mother, Giulia Ammannati, came from a family of modest standing.
He entered the University of Pisa in 1580 to study medicine, as his father wished, but turned almost immediately to mathematics and natural philosophy. He left without a degree in 1585. For the next four years he tutored privately and pursued independent research, publishing a short treatise on the hydrostatic balance and beginning the investigations into the physics of motion that would occupy the rest of his life.
In 1589 he was appointed to the chair of mathematics at Pisa — a poorly paid position at the bottom of the university hierarchy. In 1592 he moved to the University of Padua, in the Republic of Venice, where he spent eighteen years — a period he later called the happiest of his life. At Padua he taught geometry, mechanics, and military engineering; he developed an improved military compass (the compasso geometrico e militare) and began the systematic study of accelerated motion that would become the foundation of classical kinematics.
He never married. His long relationship with Marina Gamba, a Venetian woman of modest origin, produced three children: Virginia (later Sister Maria Celeste), Livia, and Vincenzio. The two daughters were placed in the convent of San Matteo in Arcetri; Virginia became his most devoted correspondent and the closest emotional relationship of his later life.
In the summer of 1609, reports reached Venice of a device made in the Netherlands that could magnify distant objects. Galileo, without seeing the original, constructed his own instrument — first at eight-power, then twenty, eventually thirty. He turned it on the night sky in the autumn of 1609 and the first months of 1610, and what he found demolished the Aristotelian cosmology that had structured European thought for two millennia. The Moon had mountains and valleys — it was not a perfect sphere. Jupiter had four moons — not everything orbited the Earth. Venus showed phases — it orbited the Sun. The Milky Way dissolved into individual stars.

Jupiter governs expansion, generosity, and the search for meaning. Saturn governs contraction, discipline, and the demand for form. The conjunction places them in the same region of the chart: the drive to see more and the demand to prove what has been seen coexist within a single structural unit. Jupiter in early Leo (retrograde) expands through the creative, the performative, and the drive to make the vision visible. Saturn in late Cancer (retrograde) structures through the register of the ancestral, the established, and the inherited. Sidereus Nuncius (The Starry Messenger), published in March 1610, announced these observations to Europe. The reaction was immediate, immense, and polarised. He was appointed Chief Mathematician and Philosopher to Cosimo II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany — a position that gave him financial security and social standing but removed the protection of the Venetian Republic, which was the one Italian state that did not answer to the Pope.
In 1616 the Congregation of the Index declared heliocentrism "formally heretical" and prohibited the teaching of the Copernican system as physical truth. Galileo was warned privately by Cardinal Bellarmine but was not formally charged. He continued his work, publishing Il Saggiatore (The Assayer, 1623), a masterpiece of scientific rhetoric and method.
In 1632 he published the Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo (Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems), a work structured as a conversation among three characters — Salviati (the Copernican), Simplicio (the Aristotelian), and Sagredo (the intelligent layman). The argument for heliocentrism was presented with devastating clarity. The Pope, Urban VIII, who had previously been sympathetic, concluded that Simplicio — the character who lost every argument — was a caricature of himself.
In 1633 Galileo was summoned before the Inquisition in Rome. The trial lasted from April to June. He was found "vehemently suspect of heresy," forced to recant, and sentenced to house arrest for the remainder of his life. The Dialogo was placed on the Index of Prohibited Books, where it remained until 1835.
He spent his final years at his villa in Arcetri, near Florence, under the terms of his sentence. Despite failing eyesight — he was completely blind by 1638 — he completed the Discorsi e dimostrazioni matematiche intorno a due nuove scienze (Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Relating to Two New Sciences, 1638), smuggled out of Italy and published in Leiden by the Elzevirs. The Two New Sciences laid the foundations of materials science and kinematics; it is the work on which his reputation as a physicist rests at least as securely as on the telescopic observations.
His daughter Virginia died in 1634. He described her death as the greatest loss of his life.
He died at Arcetri on 8 January 1642, at the age of seventy-seven. The Grand Duke wished to erect a monument in his honour at Santa Croce in Florence; the Pope forbade it. The monument was not completed until 1737.
