Zlatan Ibrahimović

Zlatan Ibrahimović was born on 3 October 1981 in Malmö, Sweden, to immigrant parents — a Bosnian father and a Croatian mother — and grew up in the Rosengård district, an area he has often described as central to his sense of identity. He began his professional career at the local club, Malmö FF, before a transfer to Ajax in the Netherlands opened the way to one of the most well-travelled careers in modern football.

Over more than two decades he played for a remarkable list of leading clubs, including Ajax, Juventus, Internazionale, FC Barcelona, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, and LA Galaxy, before a final return to Milan. He won league titles in several countries across this span, and was a prolific scorer wherever he played.

A tall, powerful, and technically distinctive forward, he combined physical presence with unusual agility and a taste for spectacular goals. He became Sweden's all-time leading goalscorer and one of the most recognisable strikers of his era, sustaining elite performance into his late thirties and early forties.

With the Swedish national team he was a long-serving captain and central figure, and his international career, with one interruption, spanned much of his time at the top of the club game. He was closely identified with Swedish football's profile abroad during these years.

He was as well known for an outsized, self-assured public persona as for his football. His autobiography, written with a Swedish journalist, became an international bestseller and helped cement his image as one of the sport's great characters. His self-confident remarks were widely quoted and became part of his public identity.

By the time of his retirement, Ibrahimović was regarded as one of the most accomplished and durable strikers of his generation, a player whose career bridged many of European football's leading clubs and whose personality made him a figure recognised well beyond the sport.
