About this chart

No birth time is documented for this person. The chart therefore shows planetary positions in their signs, the slow aspects between them, and the generational context — but not house placements, the Ascendant, or the Midheaven, which require an accurate birth time. The Moon's sign carries a ±6° margin: if it falls near a sign boundary, the sign could vary. Positions for all other planets are reliable.

The sky at birth

No birth time is documented for Bill Russell. The Ascendant, the Midheaven, and the house positions cannot be determined; the reading is confined to planetary sign placements and the aspects between planets. The positions below are calculated for noon local time and are accurate to a fraction of a degree for the slow-moving bodies. One caveat: the Moon lies near a sign boundary, so without an exact time it cannot be fixed to a single sign — it sits close to 5°37' Aquarius within a daily margin of about ±7°.

The Moon is near 5°37' Aquarius (noon position, ±7° margin). Sun is at 23°21' Aquarius. Mercury is at 9°55' Pisces. Venus is at 11°18' Aquarius, retrograde. Mars is at 6°46' Pisces. Jupiter is at 23°08' Libra, retrograde. Saturn is at 19°21' Aquarius. Uranus is at 24°11' Aries. Neptune is at 11°29' Virgo, retrograde. Pluto is at 23°03' Cancer, retrograde.

4 bodies occupy Aquarius (Sun, Moon, Venus and Saturn) — a concentration that stands out as a structural feature of the chart.

The tightest major aspects between planets: Jupiter square Pluto (0°06'); Sun trine Jupiter (0°12'); Sun sextile Uranus (0°51'); Jupiter opposite Uranus (1°03'); Uranus square Pluto (1°09'); Mercury opposite Neptune (1°34').

Uranus square Pluto (1°09') is structural but generational — an alignment of slow-moving outer planets shared across many birth years.

The engine also registers tight minor aspects involving asteroids and calculated points: Saturn conjunct North Node (0°02'); Pluto square Ceres (0°19'); Saturn sesquiquadrate Vesta (0°21'); Vesta sesquiquadrate North Node (0°23'). These are reported for completeness and carry less weight in traditional reading.

The chart was calculated using NASA JPL DE441 ephemerides, sub-arcsecond precision.

Astronomical context

Pluto crossed Cancer from 1914 to 1939. In astrological tradition this transit is linked to the transformation of home, family, nation, and the sense of belonging — the generation whose lives were marked by the World Wars and a profound redefinition of the nation and the home.

Bill Russell (born 1934) belongs to this generational configuration. Astrian groups profiles by such shared signatures rather than by any claim of shared destiny. Related profiles in Astrian: Wilt Chamberlain · Kareem Abdul-Jabbar · Jackie Robinson. The symbolic reading is correlative, not causal.

Symbolic reading

The following describes what classical astrological tradition associates with these configurations. Astrian does not apply these descriptions to the person's biography.

The Sun in Aquarius is the most prominent structural feature available without a birth time, centring the chart on independence, abstraction, and the collective. There is no Ascendant or Midheaven to anchor the angles, so the reading rests on sign placements and the aspects between planets rather than on houses.

Among the personal planets, the Moon in Aquarius is associated in tradition with independence, abstraction, and the collective (the Moon's sign is given for the noon chart and may shift with an exact time); Mercury in Pisces with imagination, dissolution, and empathy; Venus in Aquarius with independence, abstraction, and the collective; and Mars in Pisces with imagination, dissolution, and empathy. These placements describe registers of feeling, thought, attraction, and action as the tradition catalogues them, independent of the life that follows.

Jupiter square Pluto (0°06'): tradition reads expansion and meaning in friction with depth, power, and transformation.

Sun trine Jupiter (0°12'): tradition reads identity and central purpose in easy flow with expansion and meaning.

Sun sextile Uranus (0°51'): tradition reads identity and central purpose in supportive contact with disruption and innovation.

Jupiter opposite Uranus (1°03'): tradition reads expansion and meaning set in polarity with disruption and innovation.

These placements are presented as a symbolic portrait, correlative and never causal — a description within the tradition's vocabulary, not an explanation of the life that follows.

Astrology is a symbolic language with 2,500 years of literature. The reading above is interpretive, not explanatory.

Astrian does not claim that the natal chart of Bill Russell caused or determined any of the above. Astrology is a symbolic system with 2,500 years of literature. Its capacity for retrospective description does not imply explanatory capacity.

A parallel life

The following are verified biographical facts. No connection to the natal chart is implied.

William Felton Russell was born on 12 February 1934 in Monroe, Louisiana, and his family later moved to California amid the segregation of the era. He led the University of San Francisco to national championships and won an Olympic gold medal before joining the Boston Celtics in the NBA.

He became the central figure in one of the greatest dynasties in the history of team sport, winning eleven NBA championships with the Celtics across thirteen seasons, an unmatched total. He transformed the role of the defensive centre, redefining shot-blocking and rebounding, and was named the league's Most Valuable Player five times despite never being primarily a scorer; his impact was measured in winning and defence.

He became the first Black head coach in the NBA, serving as player-coach for the Celtics and leading the team to titles in that dual role, a landmark in American professional sport.

Off the court he was a prominent and courageous voice in the civil rights movement, taking public stances at personal cost during a turbulent period in American history, and he was later recognised with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Bill Russell died on 31 July 2022; in tribute, his jersey number was retired across the entire NBA. He is remembered as one of the greatest winners in the history of sport and a figure of lasting significance beyond basketball.
