Carlo Ancelotti was born on 10 June 1959 in Reggiolo, in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, into a family of dairy farmers. He grew up in rural surroundings before football took him into the professional game, and he has often spoken of those origins as formative.
As a player he was a central midfielder of high quality. He won league titles in Italy and, with the great AC Milan side of the late 1980s, two European Cups, before persistent knee injuries shortened his playing career. He also represented the Italy national team. The experience of playing within one of the era's outstanding teams fed directly into his later coaching.
He moved into management and, over the following decades, became one of the most successful and well-travelled coaches in the world game. He won the Champions League twice with AC Milan, in 2003 and 2007, and three times with Real Madrid, in 2014, 2022, and 2024, giving him a record five titles in the competition as a manager. He is the only manager to have won the top-flight league title in all five of Europe's major championships — Italy, England, France, Germany, and Spain.
His clubs included Juventus, Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid, among others, and he also managed national teams. Across these posts he built a reputation for adaptability: rather than imposing a single rigid system, he tended to shape his approach around the players available and the demands of each league.
He became especially associated with a calm, relationship-centred style of management, often described in terms of emotional intelligence and man-management. Players and clubs frequently cited his ability to manage strong personalities and to maintain a settled environment, qualities that helped sustain an unusually long career at the highest level.
